MSgt Mark Coates Bio

Master Sergeant Mark A. Coates was born in 1963 in Redondo Beach, California. He entered Recruit Training at MCRD San Diego, California in June 1981. Upon graduating Boot Camp, he reported for duty at Basic Combat Engineer School, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. And then to Bravo Company, 9th Engineer Support Battalion, Okinawa, Japan where he served as a Company clerk.

In January of 1983 he received orders to Headquarters Battalion, 29 Palms, California for duty as the maintenance NCO. After 4 months, he volunteered to fill a quota for Okinawa, and two months later reported back to Bravo Company, 9th Engineer Support Battalion to serve as the Bridging NCO. During his two year tenure, he was meritoriously promoted to Corporal and served as the Platoon Sergeant for the Heavy Equipment and Motor Transport section. During his tour, he participated in exercise Team-spirit in South Korea and conducted training on the islands of Tinian, Saipan, and Guam.
In 1985 he received orders to Wing Engineer Squadron – 37 (WES-37), MCAS EL Toro, for duty as the Tool Room NCO and team leader for a construction team. Later, he moved on to be the Training NCO for the squadron. While there Corporal Coates was selected as NCO of the month, NCO of the Quarter, and in January 1987, was promoted to the rank of Sergeant.
In 1987 Sergeant Coates requested and received orders to Drill Instructor Duty at San Diego, California. He extended to stay an additional year there and after a successful 3 year tour of training recruits, he received orders in January 1991 to Marine Wing Support Group 27, 2d Marine Aircraft Wing, Cherry Point, North Carolina as the Group Training Chief and Rear Area Security instructor for the wing.
In 1992 he was promoted to Staff Sergeant and received orders back to Okinawa, Japan to serve as Platoon Sergeant for second platoon, Charlie Company, 3rd Combat Engineer Battalion. 
In 1996 Gunnery Sergeant Coates was transferred to Instructional Management School, Camp Johnson, North Carolina, to serve as the course chief for the Instructors Trainer Course.
In 2001 Master Sergeant Coates reported to the G-3, 1st Marine Division as the Division Engineer Chief. He deployed to Operation OEF and OIF during his tour.
In June 2005, Master Sergeant Coates reported to Marine Wing Support Squadron 373 to serve as the Squadron Operations Chief, where he deployed for a third tour to Al Taqquadum, Iraq.
Master Sergeant Coates retired in August of 2007 and became the Military Instructor for MCJROTC in September of 2007.
Master Sergeant Coates’ personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with Gold Star in lieu of second award. He is married to the former Ms. Theresa Wysochzanska of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
