AVID Decades of College Dreams

Advancement Via Individual Determination

AVID's mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.

What is AVID?

AVID is a regularly scheduled elective offered throughout grades 7-12. Upon entering the program, students enroll in the advanced level college preparatory classes that fulfill the entry requirements for the University of California and California state university systems. Students receive assistance from college tutors in these academic classes. Students learn and practice college entry skills including note-taking, writing, critical reading and college entry test taking.  Students research colleges and career fields.

AVID Objectives

  • Provide academic instruction to prepare students for eligibility to four-year colleges and universities
  • Teach students the skills needed to navigate the educational system
  • Teach students the skills needed to succeed in all classes, including Advanced Placement (note-taking, critical reading, and writing)
  • Support students in their goal to seek four-year college enrollment
  • Raise the student’s level of college and career awareness
